Our History

The Deweys Pizza Story

Dewey's pizza began as a single-oven dream in a small corner of Edwardsville, IL — and grew into the community's most-loved pizza destination.

In 1997, founder Michael "Dewey" DeWitt opened the first dewey's pizza shop at 112 E Vandalia St with one mission: serve pizza so good, neighbors would come back every week. Using a hand-me-down recipe from his grandmother and the freshest local ingredients he could find, Dewey crafted a thin-crust pie that quickly became a neighborhood staple.

Word spread fast. Within two years, the original dining room had doubled in size. Over the decades, deweys expanded its menu to include deep dish, stuffed crust, calzones, and a full line of sides — all made in-house every single day. Through it all, the philosophy never changed: real ingredients, real care, real flavor.

Today, Dewey's pizza serves thousands of guests each month and is proud to be a cornerstone of the Edwardsville community — from school fundraisers to championship celebrations.

1997

The First Slice

Michael "Dewey" DeWitt opens the original deweys pizza at 112 E Vandalia St, Edwardsville, IL. The hand-tossed thin crust earns a loyal following within months.

2001

Dining Room Expansion

Demand triples. We double our dining capacity and hire our first full kitchen team, bringing family-style seating to Dewey's loyal guests.

2006

Deep Dish & Delivery

We launch the iconic Dewey's Deep Dish and introduce local delivery service — bringing the dewey's experience straight to your doorstep.

2012

Community Recognition

Voted "Best Pizza in Edwardsville" for the third consecutive year. Dewey's pizza launches its annual community fundraiser program.

2018

Full Menu Refresh

A complete menu overhaul adds craft calzones, gourmet salads, and our signature house-made sauces. Gluten-free crust options arrive.

2024

Online Ordering Launch

Dewey's pizza goes digital. Guests can now order online for delivery or pickup — making it easier than ever to enjoy your favorite dewey's pie.
